These three words say a lot about who we are. We encourage everyone to photograph whatever it is that they find meaningful. Your photos are meant to be lived with, enjoyed and shared. Our job is to help turn meaningful images into something you can hold, hang, share and keep.
You don’t need to be an expert or have a fancy camera to make photographs you love. Photographers, artists, families and businesses are all part of the Color Services community.
50 YEARS IN SANTA BARBARA
Color Services opened in Santa Barbara in 1976. Photography has changed enormously since then, and we’ve changed along with it.
The story of today’s Color Services really begins with two Santa Barbara photo labs.
After studying photography at Brooks Institute, Glen Hodges opened Specialty Photo Lab in 1986, specializing in black-and-white processing and printing. Gabe Cano joined Specialty in 2000, shortly after graduating from Brooks. Glen’s experience in photography, darkroom printing and running a lab combined with Gabe’s background in advertising and fine art photography and his interest in finding new ways to grow the business.
In 2005, Glen and Gabe purchased Color Services. The two labs were brought together under one roof and continued as Color Services.
And we’re still here.
We’ve watched photography move from film to digital and watched a new generation discover film all over again. Through all of those changes, we’ve remained independent, locally owned and connected to the photographic community that has supported us for five decades.
Film comes through our doors every day. We develop it, scan it and make prints from it. We make everyday photographs, exhibition prints and fine art work. We also print for artists, restaurants and businesses throughout our community.
Sometimes someone walks in with something we’ve never seen before and we figure out how to make it.
That’s part of what we like about this place.
You’ll find us at 230 E. Cota Street in Santa Barbara.
There are real people behind the counter and behind the machines here. Ask us questions. Show us what you’re working on. Bring us something weird.
Bring your dog. We’ll probably have a treat waiting. Grab some popcorn while you’re here. And if you’re dropping off film after hours, take a shot at Film Toss. Get the roll in the hole and there’s a prize waiting for you when you pick up your order.
We want Color Services to be a place where people feel comfortable walking in, whether you’ve been making photographs for 40 years or you’re developing your first roll.
